NCAA Tournament: Virginia No. 1 overall seed; Virginia Tech and Radford make the field

Virginia, Virginia Tech and Radford are headed to the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament and they now know their opponents in this coming week’s opening round games.

Virginia, the ACC Champions and No. 1 overall seed for the tournament, will open Friday in Charlotte in the South Region against University of Maryland Baltimore County. If Virginia wins, they will face off on Sunday against the winner of Creighton and Kansas State.

Virginia Tech will play in the East Regional and will face Alabama in the opening round Thursday in Pittsburgh. If the Hokies can get by the Crimson Tide, they will likely face the tournament’s No. 2 overall seed, Villanova next Saturday.

Radford will play in one of two play-in games vs. Long Island University-Brooklyn on Tuesday in Dayton. The winner faces Villanova in the first round.

The Atlantic Coast Conference placed nine teams in this year’s 68-team “Big Dance,” more than any other conference, with two “bubble teams” Louisville and Notre Dame left out of the field.
