Pulaski Yankees Pick Up 7-2 Opening Day Win Over Princeton

The Pulaski Yankees won their opening game on Thursday night 7-2 over the Princeton Rays.

Princeton took the lead in the top of the 4th on a two run homerun from first baseman Devin Davis that landed in the Rays bullpen.

The Yankees would respond in the bottom of the 4th. Jesus Bastidas led off the inning with a single into right field.  Andres Chaparro then doubled off the right field wall to put runners on second and third with no outs for cleanup hitter Dermis Garcia. Garcia fanned for the first out which brought up first baseman Eric Wagaman. Wagaman grounded out to Rays shortstop Zach Rutherford which allowed Bastidas to score. After four innings the score was 2-1 in favor of the Rays.

The Rays threatened in the top of the 6th putting runners at 1st and 2nd after a two out walk to Davis and a base hit by Joey Roach. That ended the night of Yankees starting pitcher Rony Garcia. He pitched 5.2 innings surrendering two earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out six batters.

Matthew Wivinis came on in relief and got Princeton left fielder Moises Gomez to strikeout and leave both runners stranded.

The Yankees would take control of the game in the bottom of the 6th. Cristopher Sanchez came in to pitch for the Rays after starter Joel Peguero pitched five innings giving up one earned run on four hits and six strikeouts.

Sanchez threw four straight pitches out of the zone issuing a leadoff walk to Yankees centerfielder Pablo Olivares. Bastidas stepped into the box and was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch from Sanchez allowed both runners to move into scoring position with no outs.

A groundout from Chaparro then allowed Olivares to score from 3rd which tied the game at 2-2.  Garcia came up and worked a full count. He watched the payoff pitch miss upstairs for ball four which put runners on first and second for Wagaman.

Wagaman sent a homerun deep into the Pulaski night over the visitors’ clubhouse which gave the pinstripers a 5-2 lead.

Wivinis pitched a flawless top of the 7th striking out the side in order.

Pulaski would extend their lead in the bottom of the 8th. Garcia sent a hotshot grounder into leftfield past a diving Kevin Santiago for a one out base hit. Wagaman stepped to the plate and sent another one over the wall for a two run shot to put Pulaski up 7-2.  He finished two for four with two homeruns and six RBI in his professional debut after being selected by the Yankees out of Orange Coast College in the 13th round of this year’s MLB Draft.

Right handed reliever Kaleb Ort came on to pitch the top of the 9th and was able to shut the door on the Rays for a 7-2 Yankees win. Wivinis (1-0) picked up the win after 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Sanchez picked up the loss to put his season record at 0-1.

The Yankees will be back in action against the Rays on Friday night. First pitch is slated for 7pm.
