Things have been going round and round with the Galax football program in recent days. Just a couple months ago head coach Mark Dixon, easily the most successful mentor in Maroon Tide history announced he was resigning. A month later Dixon returned as Galax head coach. It is believed he was given some considerations concerning program improvements and the ability to hire new staffers.
One of those new staffers will be former Pulaski County and Auburn head coach Jack Turner. It is believed Turner will be Dixon’s top aide. Turner and his family still reside in Pulaski. He was the Cougar head coach for seven years, 2003-2009 and his regular season record was 40-30.
After resigning at Pulaski County, a year later he became the new head coach at Auburn in Riner. Turner directed the Eagles for four seasons before resigning following the 2015 season. He was out of coaching last year.
Turner’s finest season as head coach at Pulaski County was 2008 when his Cougars went 10-0 in the regular season, dominating Salem twice, and finished 12-1 overall after falling in the final seconds to Amherst in the Division 4 state semi-final. Two of his Auburn teams qualified for playoffs.
Now he will join the Maroon Tide, and become a member of the faculty at Galax.
