16 students on field trip to Calfee Park transported to LewisGale Hospital Pulaski for heat exhaustion and dehydration

Pulaski County Public Schools statement on the incident Tuesday at Calfee Park in Pulaski.

The 6th and 7th grade students from Pulaski and Dublin Middle Schools, along with other middle school students from throughout the New River Valley, participated in a field trip earlier today to watch the Pulaski Yankees play at Calfee Park.  Due to high temperatures, a number of students in attendance were treated for heat exhaustion and dehydration.  Local emergency management organizations did a great job of treating students on-site through cool-down stations and most were released after a short period of time to return with their schools.  The Yankees staff also did an excellent job of making sure that water was readily available to all in attendance and were incredibly responsive to the needs and requests of each school.  A total of sixteen Pulaski County students ended up being transported to Lewis-Gale Hospital in Pulaski for additional treatment.  We currently have staff on hand at the hospital to assist in communicating with parents and coordinating any transportation needs that might arise as students are discharged.
