VDOT: Icy roads and low temperatures overnight may cause delays during morning commute
SALEM – The wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet that fell today has produced icy road conditions throughout the district and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is warning motorists to expect possible slick or icy roads tonight and tomorrow morning. Drivers are advised to consider postponing travel until temperatures rise to allow time for conditions to improve or allow for extra travel time on their morning commute tomorrow.
VDOT crews and contractors are monitoring conditions and treating roads as necessary. Currently, interstate (I-77, I-81 and I-581), primary (those numbered 1-599) and secondary roads (those numbered 600 and above) throughout the district are in minor condition heading into the overnight hours. Giles and Pulaski County are reporting moderate conditions on secondary routes and ramps and bridges.
With recent cold temperatures, even small amounts of winter precipitation can cause icy road conditions. Bridges, overpasses, curves, shaded areas, higher elevations, cooler spots and elevated surfaces will continue to be areas of concern on the roadways even as temperatures rise.
Travelers are reminded that they can get real-time information on road conditions, traffic incidents and congestion on Virginia roads by using VDOT’s 511 free mobile app or the www.511Virginia.org website and phone system, which can help travelers plan their routes accordingly.
The Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke.
