Note: According to Tom Hufford, Tester was the son of Coy Tester, who operated Virginia Oak Flooring Company in Pulaski in the 1950s, and still has relatives in Pulaski. Dean Tester was a star athlete at Pulaski High School, and after graduating from Hampden-Sydney he was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1954, and assigned to their Pulaski farm club. After playing with the Phillies for about a month, he suffered a severe injury when struck in the head by a pitched ball in a game at Johnson City. That ended his pro career, but he entered med school at the Medical College of Virginia.

My family had a close relationship with Dean Tester and and his family back in the day. Dean was not only a fine athlete, he also was a fine person and gentleman. My Dad, Robert A. “Bus” Hudson Sr. was the President of the Pulaski Phillies at the time Dean was drafted by Philadelphia, and was assigned to the Pulaski Phillies Club. It was a big thing back then that Pulaski had a local athlete on the Phillies team. At the time, I was a Bat boy along with Mason Vaughn, Jr. for the Phillies team. In fact as I recall, the Tester family did not live very far from Calfee Park. Dean’s Dad was an associate with Mr. Bob White in the business of Pulaski Oak Flooring Company. The flooring company was a big going business back in it’s heyday, located not far from Calfee Park on Dora Highway. I had so much fun back then, being in the presence of these baseball athletes.
