Independence man dies in Wythe County crash

Virginia State Police is investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash in Wythe County. The crash occurred Aug. 25 at 10:15 a.m. on Route 21, less than a mile south of Crockett Road.

A 2009 Chevrolet Impala was traveling north on Route 21 when it ran off the right side of the road, struck a fence and spun back into the roadway.

A passenger, Ronald Wayne, 95, of Independence, Va., died at the scene. He was wearing a safety belt.

Virginia State Police
