FAC for the NRV hosts Scholastic Art Awards

The Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley hosted a reception for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards this past Sunday, March 26. This is the 100th Anniversary of the Scholastic Awards, which have grown to become the country’s most prestigious awards for creative teens.
Art works from 72 high school and middle school students were accepted out of more than 500 entries into this scholastic art competition. Artwork submitted by these students garnered Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention awards. The highest rated works of art are listed as American Vision Nominees and National Award Winners.
This year, thanks to an anonymous donor, American Vision Nominees will receive a $250 scholarship from the Fine Arts Center.
“Isn’t this art amazing?” Asked FAC for the NRV Executive Director Becky Lattuca. “We hope to be able to offer these scholarships every year.”
Among the scholarship winners was Trent Hollandsworth of Radford High School for an illustration entitled Teething. Olivia Close, of Dalton Intermediate School in Radford also won a scholarship for a piece entitled, Princess De La Muerte.
For the first time years, the work of a Pulaski High School student won recognition in the Scholastic Awards as Quinn Weigel garnered an Honorable Mention for her art portfolio.
“Pattie Nuckles and Ashley Tawney at Pulaski County High School have been especially good about promoting this program with their kids,” said FAC President J.R. “Next year we hope to have some submissions from Pulaski Middle School.”
National Award Winners, American Vision Nominees, Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention designees were recognized at a ceremony held at the Pulaski Theatre later that afternoon.
