State Police investigating double-fatal crash in Smyth County

Virginia State Police is investigating a double fatal crash that occurred July 3, 2026, at approximately 12:10 p.m. on Sugar Grove Highway in Smyth County.

 

The preliminary investigation indicates a Nissan Pathfinder was heading northbound on Sugar Grove Highway near the Racoon Branch Campground when it crossed the centerline and struck a Dodge Ram head-on.

 

The driver of the Pathfinder, Sonya E. Baker, 50, of Troutdale, Va., and the driver of the Ram, David S. Shore, 64, of Troutdale, Va., both died at the scene.

 

The crash remains under investigation
