Virginia’s annual crime analysis report now available on Virginia State Police website
RICHMOND – Virginia’s official comprehensive report on local and statewide crime figures for 2025, titled Crime in Virginia, is now available online at the Virginia State Police website on the Data Analysis & Reporting Team page. Crime in Virginia continues to provide precise rates and occurrences of crimes committed in towns, cities, and counties across the Commonwealth.
This year’s publication has been replaced by the new Virginia Crime Statistics Dashboard, an interactive online tool that updates continuously as agencies submit data. Violent crime includes the offenses of murder, rape (including sodomy and sexual assault with an object), robbery, and aggravated assault. At the time of this release, Virginia recorded 18,693 victims of violent crime in 2025. This represents a 5.9% decrease in violent crime victims compared to 2024. Data presented in this report may be amended as law enforcement agencies update case information throughout the course of their investigations.
Key Findings
Homicide
- Reported homicides declined 13.9%, from 439 to 378.
- Most victims and known offenders were males ages 18–44.
- Nearly half of all homicides (46.3%) occurred in a residence or home.
- Firearms were used in 73.7% of homicides.
Motor Vehicle Theft
- Motor vehicle thefts and attempts decreased 21.0%.
- Of completed offenses, a total of 8,890 vehicles were reported stolen; 5,468 were recovered.
- Stolen vehicles were valued at more than $122 million, and 36.3% were taken from residences.
Drug Offenses
- Drug crime fell 6.0% overall.
- The most seized drug was Methamphetamine, accounting for 22.6% of all drug seizures. Cocaine seizures followed, representing 15.5%.

About the Data
The Crime in Virginia report uses the Incident-Based Reporting (IBR) system, which captures detailed information on each incident.
- Group A offenses include serious crimes such as murder, sexual offenses, robbery, aggravated assault, property crimes, and drug offenses.
- Group B offenses include less serious crimes where an arrest has occurred, such as trespassing, disorderly conduct, and liquor law violations.
Crime data are submitted electronically by local and state law enforcement agencies to the Virginia State Police Data Analysis & Reporting Team. The statistics compiled in Crime in Virginia serve as the Commonwealth’s official crime data and are also transmitted to the FBI for inclusion in the annual Crime in the United States report and published on the FBI Crime Data Explorer website.
