Virginia State Police charge Charlotte, N.C. man following I-77 shooting

Virginia State Police has charged a Charlotte, N.C., man with malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle, shooting from a vehicle, maliciously causing bodily harm to another with intent to maim, and use of a firearm while committing a felony.

At approximately 8:50 a.m. yesterday (Aug. 22, 2026), Virginia State Police was notified of a shooting along Interstate 77 northbound at the three-mile-marker.  The shooting followed a reported road rage incident.

After the shooting, the suspect vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz, left the scene.  Law enforcement later stopped the vehicle on Interstate 77 at Exit 19.  At Exit 19, law enforcement arrested Richard T. Arriviello, 61, of Charlotte, N.C. and took him into custody.

One juvenile (12) and one adult (20) female passengers in the other vehicle (a Jeep) suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting.  Both were taken to an area hospital.

The driver of the Jeep has been charged with reckless driving.

The incident remains under investigation.
