State Police arrest mayor of Haysi following grand jury indictment

State Police logoHAYSI – On Thursday, Sept. 17, 2026, special agents with the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Wytheville Field Office arrested Larry D. Yates, 72, of Haysi, Va., following his indictment by a Dickinson County Grand Jury on eight charges.

 

On Monday, the grand jury returned indictments charging Yates with six felonies, including embezzlement, use of public assets for personal benefit, two counts of credit card theft, credit card fraud, and receiving goods obtained through credit card fraud. He was also indicted on two misdemeanor offenses: credit card fraud and receiving goods obtained through credit card fraud.

 

Yates is currently being held at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority Jail in Abingdon, Va.   Yates is expected to appear in Dickinson County Circuit Court on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2026.
