LewisGale Hospital Montgomery Announces $18 Million Investment to Expand Emergency Care Access in Radford

New freestanding emergency room is part of approximately $38 million in announced investments to strengthen emergency care and medical transport across Southwest Virginia
RADFORD, Va. — LewisGale Hospital Montgomery, part of HCA Virginia, today announced an $18 million investment to build Radford ER, expanding access to high-quality emergency care for residents of Radford and the surrounding New River Valley.
The new 11,000-square-foot freestanding emergency room will be located at Tall Oaks Crossing near the intersection of Tyler Avenue and Rock Road. Expected to open in 2028, Radford ER will provide emergency care 24 hours a day, seven days a week, bringing hospital-level emergency services closer to where patients live, work and raise their families.
The investment is part of a broader expansion of emergency care services across Southwest Virginia. Together with HCA Virginia’s recently announced $20 million investment in a new freestanding emergency room in Hollins and an additional Air Care Eagle air ambulance based in Danville, the projects represent approximately $38 million in announced investments to strengthen access to emergency care and critical medical transport throughout the region.
Radford ER will become HCA Virginia’s fifth freestanding emergency room in Southwest Virginia, including planned facilities, and its second in the New River Valley, joining Christiansburg ER. The health system also operates Cave Spring ER and Blue Hills ER in the Roanoke Valley, with an additional freestanding emergency room planned for the Hollins community in Roanoke County.
“When someone is experiencing a medical emergency, having access to timely, high-quality care close to home can make all the difference,” said Michael Ehrat, CEO of LewisGale Hospital Montgomery. “Our $18 million investment in Radford ER builds on the opening of Christiansburg ER and our ongoing investments at LewisGale Hospital Montgomery in Blacksburg. Together, these investments are strengthening our network of care across the New River Valley and helping ensure more families have access to the emergency services they need, when they need them.”
Radford ER will feature:
- 11 emergency treatment bays, including a trauma bay
- Advanced diagnostic imaging, including CT and X-ray
- On-site laboratory services
- A covered ambulance entrance
Staffed by board-certified emergency physicians and approximately 25 clinical professionals, Radford ER will be equipped to evaluate and treat a wide range of medical emergencies, including heart attacks, strokes, serious injuries and other acute conditions.
As part of LewisGale Hospital Montgomery’s emergency care network, Radford ER will connect patients to the hospital’s broader medical resources and specialty services. Patients requiring additional specialized treatment or hospitalization will be transferred to an appropriate hospital when necessary.
Expanding Emergency Care Across Southwest Virginia
The Radford ER project builds on HCA Virginia’s continued investment in emergency care access throughout Southwest Virginia.
In September, HCA Virginia announced plans for a nearly 11,000-square-foot freestanding emergency room in the Hollins community of Roanoke County. Expected to open in 2028, the facility will become LewisGale Medical Center’s third freestanding emergency room in the Roanoke Valley, joining Cave Spring ER and Blue Hills ER.
The same announcement included plans to establish a second Air Care Eagle (ACE) medical helicopter at Danville Regional Airport in partnership with Air Methods. The additional aircraft will expand around-the-clock air medical transport capabilities across Southwest Virginia, helping connect critically ill and injured patients with advanced medical care when time is essential.
Together, these projects reflect a coordinated approach to strengthening the region’s emergency care infrastructure through additional community-based emergency departments, hospital services and critical care transportation.
The investments also support HCA Virginia’s broader strategy of expanding convenient access points to its integrated healthcare network. With 13 hospitals, 26 outpatient centers, 10 freestanding emergency rooms and 13 urgent care centers across the Commonwealth, HCA Virginia continues to invest in bringing high-quality medical services closer to the communities it serves.
“Radford ER represents more than a new facility. It’s an investment in the health and future of this community,” Ehrat said. “As the New River Valley continues to grow and evolve, we’re committed to growing alongside it and making high-quality healthcare more accessible for the people who depend on us.”
