Apco restores power to some 20,000 customers

Appalachian Power has restored electric service to approximately 20,000 customers who lost power this morning in the counties of Giles, Bland and Tazewell in Virginia and Mercer and Monroe counties in West Virginia. Service was restored around 1:15 p.m.

A contract crew performing work for Appalachian Power at the company’s Glen Lyn station made contact with underground electrical cables around 9:30 this morning resulting in a power outage that affected approximately 7,000 customers in the Glen Lyn area. Around 11:15 a.m., an additional 13,000 customers in the surrounding area lost service due to voltage issues associated with the original outage.

Appalachian Power employees assessed the damage at the Glen Lyn Station and other affected sub stations, and made the necessary repairs to get power restored as safely and quickly as possible.
