Arrest made in first degree murder in Wythe County

On January 13, 2023, at approximately 3:47 a.m. first responders received a call of a fire at 403 Saint Paul Church Road in the Rural Retreat community. When first responders arrived on the scene they found a vehicle on fire at this residence. Inside the vehicle, deputies found a deceased body.
After conducting interviews and collecting evidence deputies identified the suspect as Calvin Junior Duncan II DOB 4/10/1989. At 7:58 a.m. deputies found Calvin Junior Duncan II, whose residence is the same as the scene of the crime, on Saint Paul Church Road. He was taken into custody without incident.
Calvin Junior Duncan II was charged with the following.
- First Degree Murder
- Arson
- Possession of a firearm by a convicted Felon
- Use of a firearm in the commission of a Felony
- Dispose of a dead body on private property
The deceased will be taken to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke, Virginia for identification. Calvin Junior Duncan II was held without bond.
This is an ongoing criminal investigation. More charges could be pending.
