Cougar Basketball Prepares for the Future with Radford University Experience

RADFORD — The Pulaski County Boys Basketball Program partnered with Radford University’s Student Recreation and Wellness team to give student-athletes an unforgettable campus experience on Wednesday, August 12.

The busy day started with a team lunch at Dalton Dining Services. Next, the players toured the new, state-of-the-art E-Sports Gaming facility in Peters Hall, which stands as the third-largest gaming venue in the nation. The Cougars then shifted focus to higher education with a presentation from the Office of Admissions, a guided campus tour, and some practice time on the basketball courts at the Rec. and Wellness Center.

The student-athletes thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Many noted they had no idea Radford offered such amazing facilities and diverse majors. One student highlighted RU’s partnership with New River Community College, which allows for a seamless transfer plan.

“We are thrilled to have you all here on campus,” said D.J. Preston, Director of Student Recreation and Wellness. “We are rooting for you all and know that we are here to support you. Let Radford University be your next home when thinking of pursuing higher education.”

The event left a lasting impression on the coaching staff.

“I think our RU trip had a tremendous impact on our young players as most have 2-3 years of high school left,” Head Coach Anthony Akers stated. “I feel it’s extremely beneficial for them to see this early so they can begin thinking about a path for their future. Having RU so close and able to graciously host us has a great impact on these student-athletes.”

Coach Akers added that the community is blessed to have a remarkable university offering top-tier educational and recreational experiences right in its backyard.

Assistant Coach Rasheeh Jackson agreed that the visit offered a true taste of college life.

“Radford University was incredibly hospitable to us,” Coach Jackson stated. “They went above and beyond to show us love, and we truly appreciate it! Take advantage of your time, young men. Most of these guys I’ve known since they were little because my son has played with or against them since kindergarten. Now, I get to watch these young men grow into young adults and take the next step in their college journey. Time is precious. Enjoy every moment, make the most of every opportunity, and cherish these memories. You don’t get this time back.”

The opportunity to plan ahead remains a core goal for the local school system.

“The ability to offer our student-athletes different experiences that plan for their future is invaluable,” said Assistant Coach Jerome Thomas. “For them to start thinking about their futures after basketball is very important to our coaching staff and Pulaski County Public Schools. Being aligned and partnered with our neighbors here at Radford University allows for those dreams of attaining higher education to become more of a reality.”

The coaching staff expressed deep gratitude to the Highlander Family for welcoming the team with immense warmth and hospitality.
