Playing on a Saturday afternoon after the game was postponed from Friday, the Cougar boys held on to beat the visiting Cavaliers of Lord Botetourt 62-58 in the Cougar Den.

Pulaski County placed three players in double digits. They were led by Jalere Harlow with 21 points. Silas Sweet tossed in 17 and Boone Blevins chipped in with 14.

The Cougars (1-1) led throughout as they were up 12-9 after the opening quarter and stretched that to 33-23 at intermission. Harlow scored 15 of the Cougars’ 21 second quarter points.

They upped their advantage to 14 early in the third before Botetourt cut that to 45-37. Blevins tossed in eight of the Cougars’ 12  points in the quarter.

Up 60-50 with less than two and half to go in the game, Pulaski County committed four straight turnovers as they got a little sloppy with their  handling of the ball. They would hang on for the win and head coach Anthony Akers said, “I’m proud of the guys. We had two really good practices after Tuesday’s loss and today the guys carried those practices over to the game.”

Sweet tossed in eight of his points in the final stanza for the Cougars.

Lord Botetourt got 17 points off the bench from Rylan Lavender as he knocked down four- three pointers. Jordan Pennix had 12 and Landen Gray scored 10 in the losing effort.

The Cougar junior varsity (1-1) squandered a 30-15 halftime lead and lost in the last few seconds 42-39 to the Cavaliers. Braylen Anderson led the junior varsity with 11 points. Ade Jackson scored 10 and Konner Furrow had eight points and six rebounds. The young Cavaliers’ Trip Yager led them with a game-high 16 points.

Pulaski County will be back in the Cougar Den Tuesday to take on a very good Floyd County squad Tuesday, and then host Abingdon on Wednesday.

JV action for both nights tips at 5:30 with varsity to follow around 7 pm.
