Druscilla “Dru” Martin Henderson

Henderson Druscilla Martin

It is with a mix of sorrow and loving remembrance that we announce the passing of Druscilla “Dru” Martin Henderson, 82, of Pulaski, Virginia on September 30, 2026.  She died peacefully at Commonwealth Senior Living at Radford following several debilitating illnesses.

Dru was born in Pulaski, Virginia on December 2,  1943 to the late Dr. John Ralph Martin and Elizabeth Renfro Martin.  She enjoyed a happy childhood in Pulaski and was a proud member of the Pulaski High School Class of 1962.  After graduation she attended Sullins College and completed her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Radford College.  She later did postgraduate work in Appalachian Studies at Radford University.  Dru taught in elementary schools in Philadelphia, PA and Hilton Head Island, SC.  She then became a Legal Assistant in Charlotte, NC where, over a game of Monopoly, she met her loving husband of 36 years, Robert Mayes Henderson.

After their marriage Dru and Robert moved to Pulaski and together formed a graphic design firm, The Henderson Group, with Dru serving as office manager.  They shared a number of years caring for her beloved Dad, along with their adored dogs and cats.  Dru was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, a board member of the Emergency Needs Task Force, and a member of The Round Dozen Club, The Thursday Club, and The Hoe and Hope Garden Club.  She was an integral part of each group in which she made many lasting and cherished friendships.

Dru was a true southern lady.  She was a woman of grace, courtesy and hospitality with an inner strength that balanced outward charm with a resilient, unyielding core.  She had a truly loving heart and her kindness was genuine, her generosity came naturally, and she never hesitated to offer a helping hand or listening ear.  Those who knew her will also remember her wonderful sense of humor and clever one-liners.  Her quick wit and playful spirit always brought joy to the people around her.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her sister, Susan Martin Hawkins, her nephew, Preston Hawkins, her niece, Carmen Hawkins De Cecco, her uncle Dr. Henry Martin, his wife, Mary Elizabeth and their son Taylor.  She is survived by nephew-in-law, Henry “Hank” Gant, sister-in-law, Shirley Munnerlyn, brother-in-law, Bob Hawkins, several cousins and a host of friends.

Dru will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her, especially those who supported and cared for her during the past  two years:  Hank Gant, Michelle Bowden, Cary Sutherland, Steve Kirkner, Ernie Wallace, Sabrina Cox, Mike Reis, and Paul and Diana Bennett who adopted her beloved dog, Marley.  Her presence and gentle spirit will also be missed by her friends and caring staff at Commonwealth Senior Living at Radford where she enjoyed the final year of her life.  Heartfelt thanks go to the staff at Commonwealth and to the angels of Medi Home Health and Hospice for their wonderful care and compassion.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at the First Presbyterian Church, Pulaski, VA with visitation and reception following in the church Fellowship Hall.

Although Dru had a great love of flowers, she requested that remembrances be made to First Presbyterian Church, 408 Jefferson Avenue North, Pulaski, VA 24301.
