Ezra Dee Quesenberry
On September 5, 2023, Ezra Dee Quesenberry walked into the arms of Jesus, pain free, fully known and loved by His creator. Ezra was born on December 16, 1932, in Pulaski, Virginia to Ewell Clifton Quesenberry and Lillie Virginia Hall Quesenberry. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, brothers Frankie Quesenberry and Edward Quesenberry, and nephew Blaine Quesenberry. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Bonnie Jean Holder Quesenberry, daughters Amy (Mitch) Brown and Donna Deck, sister-in-law Betty Quesenberry, niece Teresa (Danny) Talbert, nephew Jimmy Quesenberry, grandsons Andrew Brown, Michael Brown and Evan Deck, grandnieces Heather (Jamie) Rupe and Jessica (Scott) McConnell, great-grandnephews Cory Rupe and Will Quesenberry and great-grandniece Lillie Rupe. Ezra also had a large extended family of in-laws he loved as his own.
Ezra graduated from Pulaski High School, attended Randolph Macon College and later graduated from Virigina Tech in 1955 with a degree in accounting. He briefly attended William and Mary Law School before serving his country as an Officer on the USS Ranger in the United States Navy from 1956-1959. Ezra practiced as a Certified Public Accountant and became a partner with John C. Muse Company which became Deloitte, Haskins and Sells and later Deloitte and Touche for more than thirty years in Southern Pines before he retired.
He was an avid Hokie fan, traveling to many football games with family and friends over the years, and he rarely missed watching or listening to Hokie football and basketball games on radio and television. Ezra loved the game of golf, playing with Bonnie and friends locally, and on many golfing trips. Watching golf tournaments on television was a weekly affair, even after playing a round of golf earlier in the day. Ezra also enjoyed playing in pro-am events associated with PGA tournaments held in Pinehurst as well as playing in tournaments to support the Sandhills Community College Foundation.
Although work and Hokie sports were large parts of his life, service and family truly defined Ezra’s life. In addition to his Naval service, Ezra served his church, Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines, NC, as a Deacon and an Elder, the Southern Pines community through his accounting firm, the Lions Club, the Sandhills Community College Foundation Board and the Middleton Place Homeowners Board. He was also a lifetime member of the local Elks Lodge. However, Ezra’s most important and impactful service was his love and devotion to his family. He put his family first in every decision he made. His wife Bonnie meant everything to him. He loved to surprise Bonnie with a sly smile, a quick kiss or an impromptu kitchen dance. Ezra spent his life loving, supporting and encouraging every member of his family. He embodied sacrifice, decency and dignity in every decision and action he took, and his legacy will never be forgotten; it will continue in the lives of those he loved.
