Galax woman driving scooter on Route 58 in Carroll County struck, killed

Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal crash in Carroll County. The crash occurred Aug. 8, 2023, at 7:30 a.m. on Route 58, less than a mile east of Partridge Rd.

A 2021 Daix PMZ50 scooter was traveling east on Route 58 when it was struck from behind by a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The scooter’s operator, Jeannie L. Darrh, 54, of Galax, Va., was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Wake Forest, N.C. On Aug. 12, 2023, she succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. She was wearing a helmet.

The driver of the Jeep, Isaiah S. Thompson, 31, of Galax, Va., was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seatbelt.

Thompson was cited for driving on a revoked operator’s license, for expired registration, and for operating an uninsured vehicle. The crash remains under investigation.
