Griffith Joins Effort to Block Expanded IRS Monitoring of Bank Accounts

Wednesday, October 20, 2021 – Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) has cosponsored H.R. 5586, the Prohibiting IRS Financial Surveillance Act, in response to proposals by the Biden Administration to expand the powers of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to monitor individual bank accounts. Griffith issued the following statement:

“The Biden Administration wants to give the IRS more power to pry into the details of your private bank account. Residents of Virginia’s Ninth Congressional District have made it clear that they oppose this intrusion into their rights, and I am determined to fight it.

“The Prohibiting IRS Financial Surveillance Act would protect taxpayers from the intrusive monitoring proposed by President Biden. I am proud to join this effort to deny the IRS its power grab.”

Griffith has previously detailed the concerns he has heard from constituents regarding the bank account monitoring proposal.
