July 4th Veterans Remembrance Ceremony planned
Citizens are invited to attend the annual July 4th Veterans Remembrance Ceremony sponsored by the Pulaski County Board of Supervisors, the Pulaski County Courthouses Exhibits Committee, and the Pulaski County WWI & WWII Commemoration Committee. The ceremony will be held at the Historic Pulaski Theatre, 14 West Main Street, Pulaski, Virginia, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
This year groups participating in the ceremony include several local veteran organizations, boy and girl scout troops, and the Wilderness Road Chorus. The ceremony will conclude with a 21 gun salute and the playing of Taps on the lawn of the Old Historic Pulaski County Courthouse at the War Memorial. Refreshments will be served at the end of the ceremony to the public in the New River Room of the Old Courthouse, and tours of the Courthouse will be offered by members of the Courthouses Exhibits Committee.
At this year’s ceremony, Corporal Lewis Kenneth Bausell, a United States Marine and posthumous recipient of the Medal of Honor; the Purple Heart; Presidential Unit Citation; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four bronze stars; and the World War II Victory Medal, will be honored and remembered. On September 15, 1944 Corporal Bausell, during combat at Peleliu, covered an exploding Japanese hand grenade with his body in order to save and protect his comrades. He died of his wounds three days later and was buried at sea. Lewis Kenneth Bausell was born in Pulaski, Virginia on April 17, 1924 and died on September 18, 1944.
