Obituary for Dr. Tamara Dawn Cooke Black, DDS

Dr. Tamara Dawn Cooke Black, DDS, age 58, of Wytheville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Thursday, December 30, 2021 at Carillion New River Valley Medical Center.  She was born on June 2, 1963 in Pulaski, and was the daughter of the late Shirley Claudine Craig Cooke, and John Daniel Cooke.  Dr. Black was an Oral Surgeon and worked in the New River Valley, and her final place of practice was at Cool Smiles in Blacksburg. Prior to her last place of service, she worked in a nursing home for mentally handicapped patients, and traveled on a mobile dental van going from school to school cleaning and working on children’s teeth, from K-5, in The New River Valley. She graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1981, and continued on to further her career in dentistry.  She graduated from MCV in Richmond, VA, in 1994 with a degree in dental surgery.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Phillip Tracy Cooke, and an infant son.  She is survived by her devoted husband, Rodney Edward Black:  a sister; Regina C. (Steve) Quesenberry of Pulaski:  four nieces and four nephews:  Scott (Katie) Quesenberry, Sara Q. Frye, Hailey, Kyra, and Quinten Cole, and Cage, Ben, and Ava Quesenberry, along with her many farm animals including Professor, her beloved horse, Bigun, her dog, and Casper, her beloved cockatiel:  also four cats and four Jerusalem Donkeys.

Per Dr. Black’s request, she has been cremated.  A memorial service will held Sunday, January 9, 2022 at 10:45 a.m. at Turkey Knob Church of God in Fries, 1847 Turkey Knob Road, Fries, Virginia 24330, with Pastor Matt Linkous officiating.
