Obituary for Elizabeth Catherine Howe Marshall

Elizabeth Catherine Howe Marshall, 99, of Dublin, passed on January 10, 2018. She was born April 18, 1918, in Pulaski County, VA, and was the daughter of the late Bettie Roseberry Howe and Daniel Sheppard Howe. She grew up in the Howe House, which is located in the Claytor Lake State Park. Elizabeth graduated from Dublin High School as salutatorian of her class. She worked at the Radford Army Ammunition bagging plant during WWII, at Montgomery Wards in Radford, and she retired from Ruritan National as the circulation secretary. On August 9, 1946, she married Guy E. Marshall. Guy, Joe Melton, and Haven Howe started and operated Melton and Marshall Oil Company, in Dublin, until the business was sold shortly before Guy’s death, May 10, 1985. At the center of her life was her family and her church family. She was a member of Mountain View Methodist Church and then joined the Dublin United Methodist Church in 1949. She was active in the United Methodist Women, the Seekers group, and the Jordan Bible Class. She served on the administrative board and was a member of the Wesleyan Service Guild. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 39 years, Guy E. Marshall, a brother, Haven Howe, a sister, Thelma Howe Melton, a mother-in-law, Helen Florence Weedman Marshall, sister-in-laws, Helen Marshall Simmons, and Ima Marshall Roberts, a brother-in-law, Calla Hugh Marshall, a nephew, Sherrard Marshall, a nephew and his wife, Jim and Bonnie Simmons, and also an infant daughter. She is survived by two daughters and their families, Kathryn Marshall Trail (Michael) and Carolyn Marshall Parker (Bob), three grandchildren – Bradley Davidson (Nancy), Sarah Trail Heenan (James), Staci Trail Childers (Jerry), three great-grandchildren – Max Davidson, Jake Davidson, and John Heenan. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Sue Howe Odom, sister-in-law, Ruth Howe, nephews and neices and their families, Becky Howe Buckland (Mark), Beth Howe Ratcliffe (Buddy), Joseph Simmons (Pam), John Simmons, Nancy Larsen, Karen Williams (Keith), Lucy Marshall Holmes (Howard), Gordan Marshall (Louise), and Betty Lou Melton Dalton. Visitation and funeral services will be held at Dublin United Methodist Church on January 13, 2018. Visitation will be held from 11:00am to 1:00pm, funeral services at 1:00pm and interment following at Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin, VA. Rev. Jo Ellen Hetherington, Rev. Richard Patterson, and Rev.
