Obituary for Mary Jane Redd Brooks

brooks mary reddMary Jane Redd Brooks, age 73 of Pulaski, Virginia went home to the lord on July 1st, 2023.   Mary was born August 19, 1949, to James “Bud” Redd and Lucy Jane Redd.  James and Lucy had 12 children.

Mary attended the Christiansburg Institute School.  On August 19, 1969, she married her former husband Walter Brooks Sr and had two children Walter and Margie Brooks, they also raised their daughter/niece Latoya Jena “Na” Brooks.

Mary had a fulfilling life being a mother, grandmother, aunt, great grandmother and friend to many family and friends.

During her life Mary worked at Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg, VA; Virginia Maid in Pulaski, VA; Trim Systems in Dublin and Pyrotechnique by Grucci of Radford where she retired.  She was a dedicated and faithful member of the First Baptist Church of 152 Ballard St, Pearisburg, VA.  She was a devoted usher and member of the choir.  She enjoyed creating and crafting different styles of arts and crafts for which she shared with family and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her paternal grand parents William and Sarah Wood Redd and maternal grandparents James and Ada Shucks.  Her parents James and Lucy Redd.  Her brothers: Joseph Lee Redd, Richard Walter “Dickie” Redd, William Thomas “Tommy” Redd.  Her sisters: Shelva “Jean” Parks and Elizabeth “Lil” Peoples.  Her daughter Latoya “Na” Brooks and grandson Jordan Walter Smith and friend Lonnie “Mr. Mann” Freeman.

Mary is survived by her children Walter Brooks Jr and wife Melissa Brooks of Pulaski, Va; Margie Brooks Gray and her husband Richard “Ricky” Gray of Elgood, WV.  Special daughter Clarissa “Chrissy” Johnson of Greensboro, NC.  Her children’s father Walter Brooks, Sr and wife Pauline of Pulaski.  Grandchildren Andrew Tyler Conner of McCoy, Va, Levi Keith Gray of Elgood, WV.   Extended grandchildren Brittany and Nelleigh Rae (great) Calvin, Paisley Calvin, Alysa Etter and Isaiah Gray.  Sisters and brother; Madeline “Madge” Howard of Princeton, WV; Edith (Anthony) Boysaw of Pulaski, VA; James (Drema) Redd of Pulaski, VA; Charlotte (Jerry) Montgomery of Pembroke, VA; Katherine “Kathy” Williams of Pembroke and Brenda Redd of Pulaski, VA.  A host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mary also leaves behind a special friend, Carol Hodge and two lifelong friends Ann Hicks and Frances Dalton of Pulaski.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 7, 2023, at 1pm at the First Baptist Church in Pearisburg with the Rev Michael Bratton officiating.  The family will receive friends at the church 1 hour before the service from 12 – 1pm.  Online condolences can be sent to the family at givensfuneralhome.com.
