Obituary for Pattye Jean Sanford Landis
Pattye Jean Sanford Landis died peacefully at the Bellaire at Stone Port memory care facility in Harrisonburg, Va., on February 10, 2023. She was born on March 18, 1927 in Holden, West Virginia, and graduated from Beckley High School. She went on to attend King College in Bristol, TN, where she met future husband, Dennis D. (DD or Denny) Landis, Sr, who was the love of her life.
Pattye was a woman of strong faith and a deep love for children. She taught Weekday Religious Education at Dublin Elementary in Pulaski County while raising her own family. She went back to college, graduating from Radford University in 1970 with a degree in Early Childhood Education. Pattye taught kindergarten and elementary school in Pulaski at Calfee and Northwood schools for more than twenty years until her retirement. After her husband’s stroke in 1991, Pattye and her granddaughter Gwenn cared for him in their home until his death. Pattye then served as a devoted CASA volunteer and was honored by her peers as Volunteer Of The Year during that time.
Pattye was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Ethel Sanford, her husband, Dennis D. Landis, Sr. and her siblings, David L. Sanford, and Alma C. Landis, Jr, and his wife Colleen of Harrisonburg, daughters Kathy Landis Raykes of Charlotte, Jeanne Landis Cooner and husband Jerry of Georgia, and Sandi Landis Aschenbeck, and husband Chip of Maine. Pattye was also blessed with eight grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, and many wonderful nieces and nephews, including Jim Tabor of Newbern, who she loved and trusted as a son.
