Obituary for Rhea Erwin “Bunny” Saltz

Rhea Erwin “Bunny” Saltz, 86, of Pulaski, Va. passed on December 19, 2017. Rhea was born in Abington, Va. and grew up in Bristol, Va. He lived and worked in Richmond, Va. before residing in Pulaski. Throughout his life, many remember Bunny for his participation in athletics, whether in high school or college, or as a coach in high school or the local community. Rhea graduated from Virginia High School in Bristol, then Emory and Henry College, and received his master’s degree from the University of Virginia. At Emory and Henry, he played in the Tangerine Bowl. Rhea served his country in the U.S. Army. Afterwards, he began his career as a math teacher and basketball coach at Christiansburg High School. He continued in his career as a math teacher and basketball coach at George Wythe High School in Richmond and then as a math teacher, assistant principal, and principal at Salem Church Middle School in Chesterfield County. While living in Pulaski, Rhea taught and coached at Radford High School and then became an elected member of the school board of Pulaski County Public Schools. Rhea was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Lou Wise Saltz; father, Ernest Ray Saltz; former wife, Margaret McNeer Saltz; and daughter in law, Theresa Baldwin. He is survived by his wife, Chime Tate Saltz; his children, Rhea Saltz Jr., Lizabeth Saltz Green (Rick), David Saltz, Tige Saltz, and Stephen Saltz; his grandchildren, Adrienne Saltz Deakins (Jon), Kathryn Saltz, Ryan Saltz, Matthew Green (Jordan), Michael Green, and Payton Saltz; and his great grandchildren Isaac Deakins, James Deakins, and Bryson Green. The family wishes to thank the staff of Richfield Wellness and Rehab for their compassionate care of Rhea.
