Obituary for Walter Edward Farmer

Walter Edward Farmer, 86, of Pulaski, VA died Tuesday, February 13th, 2018 in the Veterans Hospital, Salem, VA. Walter was born December 17th, 1931 in Pulaski, VA and was the son of the late William Lowery Farmer and Betsy Ann Anderson Farmer. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Luke E Cook.  Walter was the sixth of nine children.

Walter served in the USA Army SFC 1950-1952 during the Korean War. He became disabled while serving in the trenches and experiencing the worst of the war, earning a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. Upon his return from the war he married Irene Sutphin from Barren Spring the mother of his three children.

Walter is survived by a son, Michael L. Farmer, Graham Forge, VA, two daughters, Sharon Farmer-Dressel, Yakima, WA and Brendalea Farmer, Pulaski, VA. Six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Bowyer, Pulaski, VA. Shirley “Jean” Burgess, Stone Mt. GA, a brother, Roy “Glen” Farmer, Dublin, VA and numerous nieces and nephews.

Walter had a love of people. He was a big practical joker and prankster. He also loved fishing and hunting.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 16, 2017 at 1:00 PM from the Dora Highway Baptist Church with Pastor Harry Lee Gunter officiating.  Burial will follow in the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Dublin, VA.  Visiting will be held Thursday, Feb. 15th from Stevens Funeral Home Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Walter’s name to the Dora Highway Baptist Church.
