One killed in multi-vehicle crash on I-81

State Police logoSMYTH – Virginia State Police is investigating a multi-vehicle fatal crash that occurred this morning (Aug. 31, 2026) at approximately 7:17 a.m. on Interstate 81 northbound at the 53 mile-marker in Smyth County.

 

The preliminary investigation indicates a 2023 Ram 1500 was heading southbound on Interstate 81 when the Ram went off of the left side of the road, crossed the median, and struck a Freightliner Cascadia head-on.

 

The driver of the Ram 1500 died at the scene.

 

A medical issue is being looked at as a possible cause.

 

The crash remains under investigation.
