Patrick Henry tops PCHS in River Ridge final again; Cougars to host Danville Friday in region play

For the second consecutive season both teams had superb years, but Patrick Henry once again got the trophy Tuesday evening in Roanoke, besting the Cougars, 65-52 for the River Ridge girls basketball title. The Cougars girls had defeated the Patriots in two titanic struggles during the season, winning by one point on the road, and in overtime at home, but could not pull it off a third time.
The Patriots led 17-10 after the first quarter but by only two, 26-24 at the half, but a big third quarter was the difference as PH outscored the Cougars by 15, and took a 17-point, 49-32 lead into the final quarter. The Patriots closed the quarter on a 19-3 run.
“It’s tough to beat a team as good as PH three times in the same season,” said PCHS coach Brad Sutphin. “They played well and hit some big shots. We had stretches in the game where we could get anything to go down. I know it’s late in the season, but you can still learn even now. We need to take what happened tonight and learn from it if we are going to make another run (state playoffs).”
Both teams qualified for state playoff action. PH in Class 5, and Pulaski Co. will host GW-Danville Friday evening at 6 pm in the opening round of the Class 4, Region D tournament. PH finished 18-5 on the season, Pulaski Co. 18-6 and 12-0 during the season in the River Ridge.
Ally Fleenor led the scoring effort for the Lady Cougars with 14 points, Maddie Ratcliff and Keslyn Secrist both scored 13, and Erin Russell nine. PH was led by Savannah Derey with 18, Monasha Wright scored 10, and Shelby Fiddler eight.
