State Police investigating fatal crash in Carroll County
Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal single vehicle crash that occurred Saturday (June 20, 2026) at 2:42 p.m. on Interstate 77 northbound at the four-mile marker in Carroll County.
A 2005 Coachman Encore recreational vehicle was travelling northbound on Interstate 77 when it lost control, ran off the right side of road, and struck the guardrail.
A passenger in the vehicle, Gretchen H. Karcher, 70, of Versailles, Pa., was ejected and died at the scene. Karcher was not wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the vehicle, Ronald J. Winkler, 73, of N. Versailles, Pa., was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation.

Hi, I wanted to share this posting by Gretchen Karcher’s family.
“please help us spread the word. As many of you know, our family has recently suffered the tragic loss of our mom, Gretchen. In the aftermath of an accident, her beloved dog, Lake, became separated from the scene and remains missing.
Lake is a 50 pound Portuguese water dog and was last seen on Saturday June 30, 2026 near interstate 77 north in Virginia, approximately 4 miles north of the North Carolina border.
We know this may be a long shot, especially since most of our family, friends, followers and customers are in Pennsylvania, but we are asking everyone to please share this posting. You never know who might have family, friends, or connections in the area.
We have been doing everything we can to bring Lake home. We have hired a drone team, contacted local authorities and animal control agencies and posted fliers throughout the area. We reported to her microchip company. Despite these efforts we have not yet been able to locate her.
Lake was our mom’s constant companion. Finding her would bring a small piece of comfort to our family at an incredibly difficult time.
