State Police investigating fatal crash in Carroll County

Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal single vehicle crash that occurred Saturday (June 20, 2026) at 2:42 p.m. on Interstate 77 northbound at the four-mile marker in Carroll County.

 

A 2005 Coachman Encore recreational vehicle was travelling northbound on Interstate 77 when it lost control, ran off the right side of road, and struck the guardrail.

 

A passenger in the vehicle, Gretchen H. Karcher, 70, of Versailles, Pa., was ejected and died at the scene.  Karcher was not wearing a seatbelt.

 

The driver of the vehicle, Ronald J. Winkler, 73, of N. Versailles, Pa., was not injured.

 

The crash remains under investigation.
