VHSL makes changes to districts, regions

There can still be an appeals process, but the Virginia High School League has suggested what it thinks are the best alignments athletically for districts and regions for the state’s public schools beginning in 2019 through 2022.

Cave Spring and Hidden Valley have made an appeal to leave the River Ridge District, however, the VHSL has recommended at this point those two schools not leave for the Blue Ridge, but stay in the RR. That would keep the River Ridge a seven-school district consisting of Pulaski County, Salem, Christiansburg, Blacksburg, Patrick Henry, HV, and Cave.

There is one recommended change to add a team to the Blue Ridge however, and Class 6 Franklin County will join that district. The BR would then consist of Lord Botetourt, Staunton River, William Byrd, William Fleming, Northside, and Franklin. The threat of a potential rebirth of the old New River District may have influenced the recommendation concerning the two districts.

But it appears statewide that Class 4 will be extremely strong as Hampton, Warwick, Tuscarora, Menchville, Spotsylvania, Halifax and Culpeper will all drop from Class 5 to 4. Pulaski County will be in Region 4 along with E.C. Glass, Salem, George Washington of Danville, Halifax, Jefferson Forest, Bassett, Amherst, and Blacksburg. William Byrd falls out.
