Governor Northam Announces Mohawk Industries to Expand in Carroll County
Multi-million dollar investment in manufacturing operation retains local jobs
RICHMOND – Governor Ralph Northam today announced that Mohawk Industries, the leading global manufacturer of residential and commercial flooring products, will purchase new equipment and expand its manufacturing operation in Carroll County. Virginia successfully competed against Alabama for the project, which will retain existing jobs and enable Mohawk to continue supporting consumer demand for residential carpet.
“Mohawk Industries is an important corporate steward of Carroll County and the Commonwealth, and we are pleased the company has decided to reinvest in Virginia, securing its future longevity in the region,” said Governor Northam. “This win can be attributed to the region’s strong workforce, infrastructure, and competitive business climate. We are proud to boast this industry leader on our roster and look forward to continuing our long-term partnership with Mohawk.”
Mohawk Industries is the world’s largest flooring manufacturer, creating products that enhance residential and commercial spaces around the globe. Mohawk’s vertically integrated manufacturing and distribution processes provide competitive advantages in the production of carpet, rugs, ceramic tile, laminate, wood, stone, and vinyl flooring. Its industry-leading innovation has yielded products and technologies that differentiate brands in the marketplace and satisfy all remodeling and new construction requirements. Mohawk’s brands are among the most recognized in the industry and include American Olean, Daltile, Durkan, IVC, Karastan, Marazzi, Mohawk, Mohawk Group, Pergo, Quick-Step, and Unilin. During the past two decades, Mohawk has transformed its business from an American carpet manufacturer into the world’s largest flooring company with operations in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Europe, India, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, and the United States.
“Keeping Mohawk in the Commonwealth was a priority and the result of teamwork by the County, Virginia’s Industrial Advancement Alliance, and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership,” said Secretary of Commerce and Trade Esther Lee. “The advanced manufacturing industry continues its growth in Virginia, which is home to more than 6,000 manufacturers employing over 242,000 workers. We applaud Mohawk’s growth and investment in Carroll County and look forward to its continued success.”
“We are excited to expand production in Hillsville and appreciate the opportunity to continue providing great jobs in the Commonwealth,” Plant Manager Ed Spivey said. “Operating a growing business means creating continued opportunities for the people in this community. We appreciate our team’s diligence and dedication that supports the demand for Mohawk’s award-winning residential carpet.”
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Carroll County and Virginia’s Industrial Advancement Alliance to secure the project for Virginia. The Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission approved $95,000 in Tobacco Region Opportunity Funds. Funding and services to support the company’s employee training activities will be provided through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.
“Carroll County could not be more gratified to begin a new chapter of its long-standing relationship with Mohawk Industries,” said Steve Truitt, Carroll County Administrator. “Mohawk remains one of our largest employers, a leader in our community and a linchpin in our plans for future economic development and growth. In turn, Carroll County is committed to continue working closely with Mohawk leadership to ensure its continued success in Carroll County and the Commonwealth.”
“This announcement is welcome news for Carroll County and the region as a whole,” said Tobacco Commission member, Senator Bill Stanley. “Retaining a quality employer like Mohawk is a top priority for the Tobacco Commission, and the jobs and investment associated with this project show that Mohawk is committed to staying in Southwest Virginia long term.”
“Fostering new job creation is one of the most critical functions of state and local government,” said Delegate Jeff Campbell. “I am overjoyed that Mohawk Industries will expand its Carroll County operations and look forward to the exciting employment opportunities this expansion will offer to our hard-working residents.”
