Obituary for Douglas Wayne Spence
Douglas Wayne Spence, 71, died peacefully October 6, 2018 at his home in Draper after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Virginia on July 17, 1947 he was the youngest of 5 children born to Seagle Howard and Emma Jean (Duncan) Spence. Doug entered the US Army serving for 2 years, including a 7-month tour-of-duty in Vietnam. He was a devoted member of Max Creek Baptist Church (Draper), serving as a greeter and Deacon for several years. Mr. Spence was an avid drag racer for over 40 years, and most weekends could be found competing with his friends at Elk Creek Dragway. He retired from the Pulaski County PSA in September 2010 with 20 years of service.
In addition to his parents and siblings he was preceded in death by his grandsons Matthew Brian Parsons and Jonathan Douglas Spence.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years, Norma; children Curtis Spence of Pulaski, Karen (Brian) Poff of Radford; granddaughters Ashlyn Spence of Dublin, Kayla Poff of Radford; special pet friends Blackie and Pirelli; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and special friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 11:00 AM from the Max Creek Baptist Church, Draper, with Pastor Mike Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Dublin with Pulaski VFW Post #1184 conducting the military graveside rites. Visiting will be Tuesday evening at the church where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
