Obituary for Matthew Scott Brunner

Matthew Scott Brunner, 49, passed away Thursday, August 31, 2023, at his home in Pulaski, surrounded by his family. He was a Registrar and Political Science Instructor at Radford University and a longtime St. Jude Catholic Church member. He was preceded in death by his mother, Suzanne Moore.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Daniela Rae Stoots Brunner; children, Hattie Grace, William, Lily, and Peter; father and stepmother, Richard and Cindy Brunner; brothers Eddie Brunner (Janelle), Aaron Brunner (Kristin) and Jimmy Brunner: sisters, Diana Brunner and Sarah Brunner, mother and father-in-law, Carl and Patricia Stoots, and many other relatives and friends.
Matthew lived with deep love, extraordinary joy, and care for his family. His favorite place was home with his beautiful wife, children, and dogs. He felt such warmth and comfort at home, always full of activity, laughter, conversations, and quiet family time inside and outside. Of the many things, he enjoyed his quality time with his children, including evening chats, sporting events, plays, discussing books, attending the annual Father’s Day Picnic at Rocky Knob, and gathering for nightly prayers before bedtime. Matthew always appreciated the most beautiful and simple things in life, which was evident in his desire for very few worldly things, constant commitment to continue learning about his faith, and sincere dedication to his family. He also loved reading books (especially the classics), skateboarding, grinding and drinking coffee, the ocean, music, and baseball (Baltimore Orioles).
Matthew’s love and dedication to his brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews were evident. His whirlwind road trips to attend ceremonies, graduations, holiday gatherings, watch soccer games, and make quick stop-ins to say hello during his work travels were always special. We will never forget his smile, stance, and wave (sometimes holding a coffee mug close to him) upon arrival and departure for all of these moments.
Matthew’s care and dedication to his community are well known, from Sunday Mass to Radford University to his friends and neighbors. He brought such genuine calmness and clarity to his surroundings. His keen ability to see to understand, listen intently to hear, and easily articulate his words was so inviting. He could connect so easily with others and gain so many life-long friends. He brought so many wonderful people together while being who he was, Matthew. We love you.
A Christian Burial Mass will occur on Saturday, September 9, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Jude Catholic Church in Christiansburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Bobcat Backpacks of Radford or a charity of your choice.
