RAAP reports fire early Tuesday in storage building; no injuries to personnel

From Radford Army Ammunition Plant

At approximately 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, there was a fire at one of the storage buildings at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant.

Working with propellant is an inherently dangerous business, however, we have numerous systems in place to ensure the safety of the workforce and the community. There were no people in the building at the time of the fire.

The building that the fire took place in functioned as designed. Once ignited, the building consumed the fire and collapsed within its earthen barriers. Safety systems of the building performed as designed to ensure personnel safety and isolate the event. The fire was extinguished successfully. There were no injuries to personnel.

Due to the location of the building, the building itself, and the firefighting methods used, there was no danger to the community or the environment.
