VDOT: Watch out for re-freezing and drifting snow this evening and overnight

VDOT crews and contractors plowed secondary roads today in areas where snow accumulated

SALEM – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has been responding to the winter storm that brought several inches of snow to portions of western Virginia.
For Christmas Day, drivers will find the interstates and the primary roads (those numbered 1-599) are mostly clear with isolated slick spots.
VDOT crews and contractors have made progress on plowing secondary roads (those numbered 600 and above) throughout the day and will continue in some areas into the evening and overnight hours. Many plowed secondary routes also have slick or icy spots.
As temperatures fall even lower when the sun sets, drivers should watch out for refreezing tonight and tomorrow morning. Blowing and drifting snow are also concerns.
Road conditions are expected to improve even more as temperatures rise above freezing on Saturday.
Travelers can get real-time information about road conditions, traffic incidents and congestion on Virginia roads by using VDOT’s 511 free mobile app or the www.511Virginia.org website and phone system.
The Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke.
