BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech put together a strong first-half performance, paced by Grant Basile’s 20 points in the period, and didn’t look back in a 77-49 win against Dayton on Wednesday.

Basile led the way for the Hokies, posting an impressive stat line of 23 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks, as he recorded his second double-double of the season. Sean Pedulla tacked on 19 points for Virginia Tech, shooting 8-13 from the field. Darius Maddox matched his season high of five field goals made while scoring 12 points.

Tech hit nine shots from beyond the arc, which is the highest tally of 3-pointers made since the Hokies hit 10 against Old Dominion on Nov. 17.

For the second game in a row, Virginia Tech held its opponent to only three made 3-point field goals. Dayton’s 30-percent shooting effort from the field was the lowest percentage by an opponent this season.

How It Happened

Dayton jumped out to an early 12-6 lead before the Hokies went on a 9-0 run, which saw them gain the lead at the 13:05 mark and not look back. With 7:24 remaining in the half, the Hokies went on a 16-0 run that allowed them to take a 42-21 advantage into the break.

Virginia Tech kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 56-31 with 10:47 to go in the contest. The Hokies kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 77-49 win. Virginia Tech got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 10 of its 35 total points.
