Cougars beat Grayson County in OT

After losing two straight games, the Pulaski County Lady Cougars got back on the winning track Saturday with an overtime win over Grayson County, 82-74 in the Carroll County Christmas Tournament in Hillsville.
After winning the first quarter, 15-11 over Grayson, the Lady Cougars exploded for 23 points in the second. Kaliyah Green got eight of her team-high 24 points in the quarter to pace Pulaski County to a nine-point, 38-29 lead at the break.
Grayson County, however, got hot in the third quarter with 20 points to the Cougars’ 13 to draw within two at 51-49 heading into the fourth quarter.
Grayson had a two-point edge in scoring in the fourth to tie the Cougars at the end of regulation, 71-all.
The overtime period was all Pulaski County with Grayson County only managing three points while Pulaski County behind four points by Green, three from Ellie MacDonald, and two each from ChaCha Calfee and Dayonna Lewis scored 11 for the 82-74 win.
Carroll County Christmas Tournament
East Wilkes 50, Pulaski County 49
In a first round game Friday in the Carroll County Christmas Tournament, the Lady Cougars dropped a heartbreaker to East Wilkes (N.C.), 50-49.
East Wilkes ended the first quarter ahead, 14-9 and poured it on the Cougars in the second to take a 29-17 lead at the half.
The Cougars rallied, however, in the third outscoring East Wilkes, 18-7 to only trail 36-35 going into the fourth quarter.
East Wilkes would hold on to take the one-point victory.
Kaliyah Green led the Lady Cougars with 13 points. Other scorers for the Cougars were Dayonna Lewis and Palyn Sweet with nine, Ellie MacDonald and ChaCha Calfee had eight each, while Ellie Russell had two.
Blacksburg 57, Pulaski County 37
After starting out the season with four straight wins, the Lady Cougars took a thumping Thursday night at the hands of Blacksburg.
Pulaski County trailed from the outset, scoring only three points in the first quarter and had only nine at intermission, and trailed 34-9.
Ellie MacDonald was the only double-figure scorer for the Lady Cougars with 12.
Other scorers for the Cougars were Raiven Hughes with eight, ChaCha Calfee with six, while Kaliyah Green, Jasmine Dalton and Dayonna Lewis all had three. Ellie Russell added two.
