Dr. William Henry Cook Jr., MD

Dr. William Henry Cook Jr., MD has passed from this life at his home in Radford, VA on this 19th day of December, 2025.
He was born December 25, 1938 in Richmond, VA and raised in South Hill, VA. Dr. Cook went to the University of Virginia for his undergraduate and medical school education where he graduated in 1963 and started his residency in pediatrics at the University of North Carolina. He returned as Chief Resident of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia in 1966. He joined the United States Air Force as a Pediatrician at Minot Air Force Base in Minot, ND from 1966 to 1968 and served as Commander of the Minot Air Force Base Clinic from 1967-1968. He moved to Radford, Virginia in June of 1968. There he joined Drs. Glenn C. Hall and J. Blair Spillman in their pediatrics practice and later became the senior partner in the practice in 1991. Over the course of his career, he brought in many physicians to what would later be called New River Valley Pediatrics. All have faithfully continued the mission of caring for the children of the New River Valley. Dr. Cook retired from patient care in 2012 and from office management in 2017. He held his faith, his church, his wife and family, and his community close to his heart and will be remembered fondly by all.
He is preceded in death by his father Henry Cook, his mother Alice Cook, his mother-in-law Katherine Shipe, and his grandson Joshua William Dudding. He is survived by his wife Kay Cook, his two daughters Kristen Dudding and Kathy Wertz, his sons-in-law Ash Dudding and Jeffery Wertz, his granddaughter Kaitlyn Dudding, and his grandsons Caleb Dudding, Jonathan Wertz, Stephen Wertz, Christopher Wertz, and David Wertz.
The family will receive friends from 3-6 pm Monday, December 22, 2025, at Central Church of Radford, VA. The memorial service will begin at 6 pm with Pastor Doug Levy officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held in the Family Life Center at the church.
Interment with full military honors will be held at 9 am on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, in the West View Cemetery in Radford.
