Edith Kate Thompson Wayne

Edith Kate Thompson Wayne of Dublin, Virginia, joined her beloved late husband, Al Wayne, on a beautiful autumn morning, November 13, 2023. Edith Kate was born March 28, 1936, in Bland, Virginia, the eldest daughter of the late Zeb and Alma Thompson, and grew up in Dublin, Virginia. She is survived by her three daughters, Tamala Wayne and husband, Chris Sauer, of Richmond, Va.; Joy Wayne, of Bedford, Va.; and Christi Wayne and husband, Charlie Whitescarver, of Christiansburg, Va.

After graduating from Dublin High School, Edith Kate moved to Bluefield, West Virginia to attend business school. Ready for her next adventure, she then made her way to Louisville, Kentucky, to live, work, and attend the Kentucky Derby. Edith Kate eventually returned to Dublin to be with her family, including her beloved sister and best friend Sue Thompson Hubble, and her adored brother Zebbie Thompson. In Dublin, she spent time with friends at the Dublin Sundry, where she met the love of her life, Al Wayne. The first time Al saw Edith Kate walk into the Sundry, he said to his friend, “I’m going to marry that girl.” Al and Edith Kate married in Dublin in 1963 and later moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where they lived for several years while Al served in the Air Force before they returned to Dublin to be with their families and raise their three daughters, Tammy, Joy, and Christi.

Edith Kate loved roses, was an avid reader, and was always finishing a crossword puzzle. She was mischievous and had a quick wit and wicked sense of humor, with a spark that only a redhead could have. “You can have your Kate and Edith too!” was one of her favorite quotes. She loved Elvis Presley, always won at Scrabble, and was a lifelong member of the Dublin United Methodist Church. She was also known for her amazing baking skills, especially her famous pound cakes (Al’s favorite) and peanut butter “jobbies” that she made for every holiday. Being a city girl at heart, Edith Kate was adventurous and loved restaurants and travel, especially to New York City.

Edith’s greatest love, though, was her family. She will be missed by so many and was so deeply loved. Her daughters and sons-in-law absolutely adored her and will miss her endlessly.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at Dublin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Shelor officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. The family will receive friends on Friday at the church from Noon until 1:00 p.m.
