Fort Chiswell defeats Grayson County, 62-48

Fort Chiswell logoFort Chiswell traveled to Independence on Friday night to tangle with the Grayson County Blue Devils. Both teams were undefeated in the Mountain Empire District so needless to say the gym was jam packed and both teams didn’t disappoint as the game stayed tight throughout with the Fort eventually taking the 62-48 victory.

The Devils struck early as they took an 11-9 lead and held the Pioneers to their lowest scoring quarter all year. Grayson slowed the ball down on offense and played tough defense in their halfcourt trap. The Blue Devils would pack the paint with three sometimes even four defenders when the VHSL Leading Scorer, Owen Jackson, would attempt to drive. This opened the gates for Sophomore Guard, Ty Crockett, as he lit the 3pt line up going 5 for 7 and ran wild for 21 total points.

Crockett also played very well on the defensive end as he had two important blocks and tallied four rebounds. Kenton Sutphin and Eli Eversole also made their presence known on both ends as Sutphin knocked down two three balls, pulled down six rebounds, dished out six assists, and finished with seven points while Eversole helped control the boards with eight rebounds and five points.

In the end, the Pioneers would open the contest up in the second half as Owen Jackson would toss in a game high 27 points on 8 of 16 shooting including two long three pointers and a big two handed dunk that got the Pioneers charged at the start of the second half. Jackson also ended up with nine rebounds. Jessie Ayers rounded off the rest of the Pioneer Scoring with a big take to put FC ahead for good in the second quarter.

Grayson County was paced in scoring by Maverik Goad and Parker Dowell. Goad finished with 16 while Dowell knocked down 12. Ben Hill also shot the long ball well as he hit three 3-pointers and tallied nine points.

With the win the Pioneers improve to 12 wins and 5 losses on the year with home games coming up with Giles, Grayson, and GW next week.
