| RICHMOND, VA – Today, Governor Glenn Youngkin remarked on new application data from the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) reporting that the Board of Contractors is on track to receive more than 14,000 new applications this year from contractors and tradesmen applying for licensure in the Commonwealth. The projected number is a ten percent increase from 2024 and nearly double the application volume handled a decade ago.
“Contractors and tradesmen know that opportunity thrives in Virginia,” said Governor Youngkin. “With record investment in the Commonwealth across industries, Virginia isn’t just competing to win, Virginia is winning! To everyone who is looking to start the next great chapter in their professional career: Virginia is the place to build your future.”
“The increase in license applications, especially in skilled and high skilled trades, is more proof and validation that trades jobs offer long term, well paying, family sustaining careers,” said Secretary of Labor Bryan Slater. “In many of these fields, Registered Apprenticeships provide opportunities where someone will train you, pay to train you, pay you while they are training you, and likely give you a job when they are done training you, all without $50,000 or $100,000 dollars in student debt when you are done. This is also proof that our universal license recognition program is growing by leaps and bounds, with over 1,100 individuals coming from other states to get licensed and work in Virginia. Virginia is open for business!”
“Every one of the 323,000 licenses issued by the agency represents an opportunity for an individual to earn a living and make a difference in their community,” said Brian Wolford, Director of Virginia’s Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. “I am proud to serve alongside a team that continually delivers excellence in meeting the needs of Virginia’s workforce.”
The record number of licensure applications is the latest sign of robust investment in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The news comes after Governor Youngkin announced more than $100 billion in capital investment has come to Virginia since he took office and two months after Moody’s Ratings reaffirmed Virginia’s AAA-bond status, citing Virginia’s healthy balance sheet, strong liquidity, below average liabilities, conservative fiscal management and prudent stewardship of taxpayer dollars in their decision. The flurry of economic activity in Virginia is a testament to Virginia’s status as the top state for business. |

As one that came from out of state, getting my class C license was next to impossible. I was told verification would take at least 7 months and potentially require a hearing just to be able to take the test. Why do they make it so hard for people moving here?

Sounds like the trade contracting in Virginia is going to be oversaturated and many applicants will go bankrupt. More applicants does not equal more successful businesses. A given region can only support so many contractors. Especially since people will cut back as our economy sinks into recession.

not in S W,VA.not a damn thing has changed for us.It doesn’t matter who is in office we get screwed by our governors
June 19, 2025 @ 8:32 pm
depends on what county ur in. we’ve had the people that were running warren county stealing from us tax payers the EPA was involved. they didn’t just steal a couple dollars they stole millions and now taxes are so high it’s ridiculous. we were made to pay back what was stolen. they bought their families homes bought their friends homes just pretty much helped their self. so be careful where u do business folks all I’m saying.

All good and well except auto tax.
Nobody should have to pay taxes forever on a damn car or trunk .
This is fiscal overreach.

People have no choice but to use a trade to try to feed their families after job killing Donald Trump has destroyed the economy with his across the board tarriffs. I work for Volvo trucks in Dublin Virginia and since Trump took office we’ve had three reductions in production and two permanent layoffs and it’s all a result of his tarriffs and the worst part of it all Volvo built a brand new plant in Mexico and Trump’s tariffs don’t even affect the medium and heavy duty truck market so trucks can be shipped up here for sale tariff free.

June 19, 2025 @ 11:41 pm
Not willing to trade my freedom, liberty, due process and Healthcare etc For a bunch of contractors and tradesmen applications !
Youngkin has been a horrible Governor! He only won election for pretending he was somebody , he wasn’t! He never could have won a Republican primary, back in 2021! He has damaged progress in VA in so many ways! He was gleeful when Virginian Federal government workers lost their jobs! Not a very good leader for all Virginians!

Governor Glenn Youngkin is getting construction workers trained and licensed in VA with BiG $$ for young and old alike; also he is keeping an eye on AI in the Commonwealth making sure PEOPLE stay IN CHARGE here and are not subjugated to the rules of ‘The Machines’; plus in April alone Youngkin announced Virginia Homeland Security Task Force Had Arrested way, way Over 500 Criminal Illegal Immigrants, Over 130 Gang Affiliates and got these blood-thirsty dangerous contaminants off our lovely streets and far far the hellaway from our women, kids and families where they can no longer lay-low on the hardworking VA people’s dime. Reelect Youngkin over and over and over again so Virginia stays a jewel in the USA treasure chest!

Dear Governor Virginia
I hope you’re transparent. When I get approval then I’ll be sure thank you because I struggle in Virginia since 03/13/2006 when I was arriving in Virginia I was 40 years old and 58 upcoming July 01 I am going to be 59 years old
I struggle in finance and it’s hard first immigration to be resettled in America and did get American dreams and I had gotten my citizenship in Virginia and this my home and country
June 20, 2025 @ 12:44 am
Yeah you idiot. You stood by and let all the professionals in the federal government get fired, so now they are getting licenses so they can work in the private sector.
June 20, 2025 @ 5:47 am
This Is Absub..
I’m seeing beautiful neighborhoods and communities being overran and over building with No infrastructure in places to handle traffic because they don’t live here…Just rich men filling their cofffers and we stuck in gridlock for hours.

Why is the Virginia Government not passing laws against unlicensed trades/contractors in the state. I was told told by DPOR that as a licensed contractor on a job and an unlicensed contractor are on the same job that the property owner and even I could be fined even if I did not hire them. I have reached out to Virginia Real Estate Board and asked why is there not a statement in the purchase contract where and how the new owner can check a person’s license info. Even make them acknowledge the statement with a signature after the statement. DPOR only sends out a letter to the violators with no follow-up or fines?
June 20, 2025 @ 6:50 am
Voting for Abigail Spanberger this fall!
June 20, 2025 @ 7:05 am
I hope DPOR will pay more attention to applicants!!!!
We have very bad experience with contractor and his wife who was his agent.
They stole from us much money ,abounded our project, forged my husband signature and notarized.
Yes,DPOR investigate him, suspended his license and what….He is now works in Florida,She still has notary lisence and real estate licence!!!!!
Need more strict laws !!!!!!!!

June 20, 2025 @ 7:46 am
Probably a majority of those applicants are federal workers who were laid off by DOGE. We are all looking for other forms of work to to provide for our families!
June 20, 2025 @ 7:52 am
Let’s check the numbers of applications for previous Governor. Can you email them or let me know how I find out.
June 20, 2025 @ 5:06 pm
it’s the layed off government works governor youngkin didn’t give any push back on the government workers because God knows we don’t need the department of health education, veterans affairs social security administration who needs it right wait maybe veterans seniors children that need a education. all I know is youngkin should get his head out of somewhere that I don’t want to say of Trump’s you know what he could care less about his consistituants
