| RICHMOND, VA— Governor Glenn Youngkin released the following statement after a federal judge ruled to reinstate self-identified noncitizens back onto the voter rolls:
“Let’s be clear about what just happened: only eleven days before a Presidential election, a federal judge ordered Virginia to reinstate over 1,500 individuals–who self-identified themselves as noncitizens–back onto the voter rolls. Almost all these individuals had previously presented immigration documents confirming their noncitizen status, a fact recently verified by federal authorities.
“This is a Virginia law passed in 2006, signed by then-Governor Tim Kaine, that mandates certain procedures to remove noncitizens from the voter rolls, with safeguards in place to affirm citizenship before removal–and the ultimate failsafe of same-day registration for U.S. citizens to cast a provisional ballot. This law has been applied in every Presidential election by Republicans and Democrats since enacted 18 years ago.
“Virginia will immediately petition the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and, if necessary, the U.S. Supreme Court, for an emergency stay of the injunction.” |

Why is this even an issue? Non-citizens should never have been able to vote in any election, past or present. There are certain crimes that cause voter privileges to be taken from US citizens so why in the world would we ever let a non- citizen vote in our elections. Makes no sense!

Your headline about governor Youngkin’s actions is totally misleading. These voters have not been proven to be noncitizens. In fact, a significant number of them have registered with proof of their U.S. citizenship. Mr. Youngkin’s actions were a political stunt which he knew beforehand was illegal.
These people like you or I failed to complete a field on a form. The difference is that as we completed the form online we were prompted that the field or box had to be checked. With voter forms there is not someone there to
prompt us to immediately correct the form.
The honest and honorable thing for Governor Youngkin to have done, would have been to made an effort to contact those persons and find if they needed to correct the form, rather than attempting to make some cheap political hay by stating falsely that these people were noncitizens and not eligible to vote.

My sense is this action by the state government would have been fine if it was timed according to the federal law put in place 31 years ago. They needed to take this action more than 90 days ago. Here is some information about the law.
National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA).
Section 8(c)(2) of the NVRA, also known as the Quiet Period Provision, requires states to complete systematic programs aimed at removing the names of ineligible voters from voter registration lists no later than 90 days before federal elections. The Quiet Period Provision applies to certain systematic programs carried out by states that are aimed at striking names from voter registration lists based on a perceived failure to meet initial eligibility requirements — including citizenship — at the time of registration.
