State police probe fatal crash in Carroll County

Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal crash in Carroll County. The crash occurred July 19, 2023, at 2:05 p.m. on Route 58 at the intersection with Breezy Ridge Rd.

A 2023 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling north on Breezy Ridge Rd. when it failed to yield the right of way to a 2018 Ford F-150 pickup truck traveling east on Route 58. The Ford could not avoid striking the Chevrolet as it pulled across the eastbound lanes and the two vehicles collided in the intersection.

The driver of the Ford, Gary M. Gravley, 60, of Hillsville, Va., was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He succumbed to his injuries sustained in the crash on July 29, 2023 at the hospital. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Gerald E. Stockner, 77, of Hillsville, Va., was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt.

Stockner was cited for failing to yield the right of way. The crash remains under investigation.
