School board votes to recommend to supervisors that middle school entrance road be named after Medal of Honor winner

The Pulaski County School Board this evening voted unanimously to recommend to the Board of Supervisors that the entrance roadway to the new middle school be named after the county’s lone Medal of Honor winner.

Vice Chairman Mike Barbour made the motion to recommend the roadway be named Corp. Lewis Kenneth Bausell Medal of Honor Way.

The board approved Barbour’s motion on a 5-0 vote.

Controversy had erupted in recent weeks over the name of the roadway that will lead to the entrance of the new Pulaski County Middle School – currently under construction along Route 11 between Pulaski and Dublin.

Members of the Citizens for Education group, which led the community effort to get a bond issue passed in the November election to build the school, approached the school board several weeks ago asking that the roadway be named “Citizens Way” after that citizen-led effort.

Their proposal started debate throughout the county over the roadway’s name, angered veterans in the county and prompted some citizens to recommend other names for the road.

The school board’s recommendation will now go to the Board of Supervisors, which Barbour noted during Tuesday’s meeting has the ultimate responsibility to name the road.
