Griffith Statement on Governor Youngkin State of Emergency Declaration

Thursday, October 23, 2025 – As Senate Democrats continue to vote against a clean Continuing Resolution and prolong a government shutdown, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has declared a state of emergency to provide emergency hunger relief for Virginians.
In response to this news, U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement:
“Making poor Virginians starve is a ‘middle ages siege’ mentality. Democratic Congresswoman Katherine Clark’s comments that Americans who suffer from shutdowns are seen as ‘leverage’ in this shutdown fight are plain wrong.
“I voted for a commonsense solution that could have avoided this outcome. Republicans have a commonsense solution at the table: a clean Continuing Resolution. Senate Democrats voted against it 11 times. If they reverse course, Virginia’s most vulnerable communities can be properly shielded from Democrats’ personal animus with President Trump.
“I applaud Governor Youngkin for taking the necessary steps to protect our families and our children in Virginia’s Ninth District.”
BACKGROUND
Earlier today, Congressman Griffith spoke to Punchbowl News and voiced his concerns about the Democratic Party’s shutdown affecting SNAP.

Democrats have voted against the bill be ause it strips hundreds of thousands of Americans from receiving necessary subsidies to offset costs of ACA health insurance. This is another tactic to undermine the ACA and attempt to dismantle it without having anything to put back in its place. Senate democrats voted down the Shutdown Fairness Act because while it would pay federal workers during shut down, it unilaterally gave Trump power to decide who would get paid which means that it could be used unfairly as an intimidation or compliance tactic. Democrats introduced the True Shutdown Fairness Act without the stipulation of being able to pick and choose and Republicans voted it down. THIS IS ALL AN INTIMIDATION TACTIC TO ATTEMPT REMIND PEOPLE WHO HAS THE POWER. However it is WE THE PEOPLE who have the true power and it scares them. Continuing to support legislation that harms Virginians and all Americans is shameful. Shame on the Republicans going along with this administration and tearing down our democracy. History will not look kindly on any of you!

The government does not exist to hand out free (tax payer) funded food. Not a shortage of smokes in their mouths though, but they won’t hop on the 75 cent county bus and go get a job will they? It’s shameful what our elected officials are doing, but it’s even more shameful for the 1/3 (possibly more) Americans to exist long-term on the backs and hard work of those around them. There’s a church on every corner of this valley, let the private sector feed the poor if they choose to. EBT is yet another bloated and grossly abused federal subsidy that should be erased.
