Abingdon football coach resigns

Darren Reed, the head football coach of the Abingdon High Falcons resigned Thursday morning. Reed had been at Abingdon four years and had posted an overall record of 34-12. His plans have not been revealed.

Abingdon principal B.J. Lasley informed the public through an email that said, “At this point I have been informed by coach Reed that he is stepping down.” Lasley made no comment when asked how they would replace Reed at this late date. Reed has been the head coach at Wise, and was an assistant coach at Gate City, Twin Springs, and George Wythe of Wytheville before getting the Abingdon post.

Reed is the third head football coach in this region of the state to step down in the past week. Eastern Montgomery and Fort Chiswell High Schools also had their head coaches resign leaving those three schools in a major bind. Official football practice begins next Thursday, July 26, a bad time not to have a head coach. Pulaski County plays Abingdon at home in Dobson Stadium the fourth game of the coming gridiron season.
