Nelson Miller Wert, Sr. age 92 of Pulaski, departed this life on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. He was a 1949 graduate of Lansdale High School in Pennsylvania. He was a member of the chess team and won three letters for doing so.

Nelson served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1953 and was stationed in Germany and North Africa before returning home and being discharged. Nelson and Mary Nance were married in 1954 and they lived in Pennsylvania and Virginia before settling in Pulaski, Virginia. He learned the plastering trade from his father and brother and pursued that trade until 1987 when he became disabled.

He was very active in the Former Eastern Star Chapter 113 for years, serving in different stations. He was an active member of the Former Pythagoras Masonic Lodge #239, A.F. & A.M., where he proudly received his 25-year pin and certificate and served as steward until the lodge closed and merged with Snowville Masonic Lodge #159 A.F. & A.M., where he was given an active-honorary membership. Nelson was also involved in several support groups in the Pulaski area, over many years. He was a proud member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pulaski, where he served on the church council and was an active member in the men’s group.

He was preceded in life, by his parents: Charles Alfred Wert and Violet Freed Wert, brother and sister-in-law; Richard and Joan Wert, their stepson Shawn Wert, sister; Kathryn Quinn, all of Pennsylvania, and a sister-in-law; Francis Hufford from Waynesboro, Virginia; brother; Charles Wert of Red Hill, Pennsylvania

Nelson is survived by his son; Nelson Miller Wert, Jr. of Pulaski: sister; Dorothy Tomlinson of Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Memorial service will be held Friday, October 6, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Jessica Darty officiating. Interment will be privately held later in Oakwood Cemetery beside his wife. Military Honors will be held for his service to the Air Force. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 6, 2023 at the church from 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. Snowville Masonic Lodge # 159, will conduct Masonic burial rites beginning at 1:45 p.m. in the church. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Men’s Group or to the church’s youth group.
