Obituary for James Walter “J.W.” Smith, Jr.

James Walter “J.W.” Smith, Jr., 56 of Pulaski, Va., born Dec. 7, 1966 went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 28, 2023.

J.W. was a 1985 graduate of Pulaski County High School (PCHS), and attended two years at Concord University. To his friends he was known as Coach Smith, Dub or just “J.” He was a lover of football and was fortunate to be an assistant defensive coach for the PCHS Cougars and coached little league football. He also loved “America’s Team,” the Dallas Cowboys.

In 2014, J.W. re-dedicated his life back to the Lord. He was a member of the Radford Church of God in Christ where he served as a deacon, and head of the men’s ministry.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Agnes Smith Sr. and James and Geraldine Holland, Godfather Rev. Perry G. Slaughter.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Teresa Calfee Smith; children, James Walter Smith, III (Trey), Charlotte, N.C., Carrie Briana Smith, Pulaski, Va.; parents, James and Rosa (Sharon) Smith, Pulaski, Va.; sister, Sherry Johnson, Dublin, Va. and Jeremy Smith (Bobbie), Roanoke, Va.; nephew and niece Jeremiah Alexander Smith, and Alexandria Jhoe Smith, Midlothian, Va.; Godmother, Peggy Slaughter; God brothers and sisters, Perry, Elaine, Phillip and Patricia; step-children Josh Calfee (Lindsey), Christiansburg, Va., Josh Calfee, Pulaski, Va. and a host of grandchildren and Carter Nenno on  the  way.

Services will be Monday, April 3 at the Radford Church of God in Christ. Viewing will be at 1 p.m. Service will begin at 2 p.m.

The family is in the care of Serenity Funeral Home.
